Al Capone linked to Franklin D. Roosevelt? Yes, it’s a documented fact
News of a politician being connected with a corrupt person is hardly unusual these days. Living in Illinois, we are intimately familiar this topic, as it seems to be a daily occurrence here. But, news of FDR being linked to Al Capone? Now that would qualify as news.
Well, it’s true, but not in the manner that you are probably thinking. In a strange twist of events related to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Al Capone’s car became FDR’s first bullet-proof, armor plated limousine.
And it was due to a law that prevented the government from purchasing vehicles that cost more than $750 (a little more than $10,400 in today’s dollars) . You can read the account here.
Come to think of it, I don’t know what would be more shocking to imagine – Al Capone and FDR being linked in some sort of nefarious conspiracy or a law that prevented the government from spending $10k on a car. I could probably be persuaded to trade the former for the latter these days…
